Social Emotional Learning Home
Welcome to our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Page!!
In Gadsden ISD, we know that learning goes beyond academics. Social-Emotional Learning equips students with essential life skills—like understanding their emotions, building positive relationships, and making thoughtful decisions—that support both personal well-being and academic growth. Together with families, educators, and our community, we are committed to creating safe, caring environments where every student feels connected, valued, and empowered to thrive.
What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults develop the skills to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, build and maintain healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Our district follows the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework, which highlights five key areas of Social-Emotional Learning.
These skills help students succeed in school and in life:
-
Self-Awareness – Understanding your own emotions, strengths, and values.
-
Self-Management – Managing emotions, setting goals, and practicing self-control.
-
Social Awareness – Showing empathy, respect, and understanding for others.
-
Relationship Skills – Building healthy friendships, communicating clearly, and working well with others.
-
Responsible Decision-Making – Making safe, caring, and thoughtful choices.
In our district, SEL is about helping students succeed not only in school, but also in life—by fostering resilience, kindness, and a sense of belonging.
